Electric Charges

Concept Explanation

Electric Charges

Electric charges: We already know that atoms are made of protons neutrons and electrons. The positively charged particles in an atom are called protons. The negatively charged particles are called electrons. The atom as a whole consist of an equal number of positive and negative charges, and in such a case of the atom is said to be electrically neutral. If, however the charges are not balanced, the object will have an electric charge (positive charge if protons are more in number than electrons and negative charge if electrons are more in number than protons. If two objects having the same type of charge are brought close together, they repel each other (i.e. push each other away) however if the two objects having the opposite type of charge. (positive- negative or negative-positive), they attract each other. Therefore, we can say, like charges repel each other and unlike charges attract each other

-ve charged body large rightarrow  Body has gained electrons  and  +ve charged body large rightarrow  Body has lost some electrons

Properties of Electric Charge:

  •  Charge is always associated with the mass i.e. charge cannot  exist without mass. Tthough mass can exist without charge.
  • Charge is transferable. Process of charge transfer is called conduction.
  • Charge is invariant i.e. it is independent of frame of reference.
  • Similar charges repel each other while dissimilar attract.
  • Electroscope is a device used to confirm the presence of charge and its, nature on a body. The simplest type of electroscope is a pith ball electroscope.
